CARCERAL
A resolute serif typeface that was born from the municipal typography of Eastern Texas and rooted in the perseverance of handcrafted quality.
THE ORIGINS
Inspired by historic tile work lettering found in small towns of Eastern Texas, Carceral was created to revitalize the quality of handcrafted type for broader design contexts. With roots dating back to 1932, these letterforms produced an opportunity for a typeface with a bold, Texas personality honed into refined forms. The original characters were robust with beveled edges, mono-line weight, and angular serifs.
As a result, Carceral is distinctive for its emphatic strokes and edgy serifs. This makes it excellent to use at a large-scale display for strong headlines and sturdy word marks. Spunky and assertive, Carceral is firm but not overbearing.
