ANDERSON UNIVERSITY TYPE FOUNDRY

The first student-founded and student-led type foundry.

FOUNDING THE FOUNDRY

The idea of creating the Anderson University Type Foundry (AUTF) was first inspired in 2022 by the first group of students to take the Digital Resurrections in Typography class led by Professor Tim Speaker. These students had a passion for typography and history that they wanted to share with AU and the surrounding community of designers. Until this point, their idea has lived within the confines of the Typography course taught once a year.

This year, I had the great opportunity of joining three fellow design students in the process of establishing AUTF to be the first student-led type foundry. After creating a set of goals and pitching our dream to the Student Government Association (SGA), AUTF is now established as a student organization at AU!

AUTF is a group of AU students designing and distributing original typefaces while working to expand professional design skills in the area of typography. To expand on a unique area of strength in the design curriculum and classroom experience, AUTF fosters community within the design department, specifically students that have a special interest in Typography and type design. AUTF will provide resources for students beyond the classroom, a connection to a professional network of alumni, and a way to bring their work to a wider audience.

The Anderson University Type Foundry exists to create an enduring community of typographers beyond the classroom, who are seeking to establish work and relationships that will prevail for years to come.

THIRD ANNUAL AUTF EXHIBITION 2023

In the fall of 2023, AUTF hosted the third annual typography exhibition through Anderson University’s Digital Resurrections in Typography class. This exhibition, titled Transcend: Across, Beyond, and Through, examined enduring concepts of resurrection typography and displayed the students’ typeface designs.

Along with being a Co-Founder for AUTF as a student organization that same semester, I was given the opportunity as Exhibition Manager of Transcend, coordinating with several design teams and leading junior designers in the design, building, and installation of the exhibition.

SECOND ANNUAL AUTF EXHIBITION 2022

In the fall of 2022, AUTF hosted the second annual typography exhibition through Anderson University’s Digital Resurrections in Typography class. My role in this exhibition was Junior Project Manager, in which I assisted the Senior Project manager in the strategic organization of design teams in order to create a cohesive and professional exhibition of the students’ work.
